For Fall 2024, Crate & Barrel has partnered with Projecthrive to create a collection of handloom ikat that employed 80 artisans for 559 workdays. This collaboration provided both economic opportunity and representation to artisans with virtually no access to education and helped each of them provide for their families.
The fabric uses an ancient yarn tie-dye technique practiced by artisan communities. It’s then woven on handlooms, with each weaver producing only a few meters daily. The dyeing process takes weeks, and each motif carries deep symbolism from village life.
Through Projecthrive initiative, Sonica Sarna has been capacity building and training these communities and connecting them with socially minded brands such as Crate & Barrel since 2019.
By choosing hand tie-dye over machine printing, we’ve sequestered 3036 kg of CO₂ emissions.
Through this collaboration by using hand tie and dye instead of machine printing, we have saved 308 kW of electricity.
