For Summer 2025, SPELL has partnered with Projecthrive to create a capsule collection of hand block print styles that employed XX female artisans for XXXX workdays. This collaboration provided both economic opportunity and representation to artisans with virtually no access to education and helped each of them provide for their families.
Block printing is a traditional
artisanal technique done in Bengaluru in South India and uses wood carved
blocks to stamp patterns onto fabric one repeat at a time. Each meter of fabric
is printed a motif at a time by a generational artisan and takes several hours
to print.
Projecthrive has been partnering with these communities to
connect them with the American market since 2009.
Through the utilization of hand block printing rather than machine printing, we’ve sequestered 2298.19 kg of CO2 emissions in the production of these garments.
Through this collaboration by using the block printing technique instead of machine printing, we have saved 47.43 kWof electricity.
